Higgins House

This is the home of John and Dora Higgins and their children at the time of the Civil War.  For more on the Higgins', see Higgins Store or Dora's letter about the visit of JEB Stuart's cavalry in the Gettysburg Campaign.  Note, that the home originally faced Middle Lane (to right in picture).  The ground floor extension on this side was an open front porch and the main entrance.  This was later enclosed and the modern main entrance was added on Adams Street, the original side of the house.  Also, note that the original log cabin portion of the structure is still evident as a NE wing, off the current back parking lot.  The gazebo-like roof to the left of the picture, is a recreation of the well house and covers this original feature of the property.
